King Charles Considered Stripping Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of Their Royal Titles After Their Return to the UK Following a Trip That Left Him “Furious”
A royal family controversy has resurfaced after reports revealed that King Charles III once considered taking away Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles following their controversial trip to Nigeria in May 2024.
According to royal expert and author Tom Quinn, the couple’s three-day visit reportedly caused considerable frustration within the royal family, particularly because their engagements appeared similar to an official royal tour.
Harry and Meghan travelled to Nigeria for a series of charitable activities, school visits, receptions and engagements connected to the Invictus Games. They received enthusiastic welcomes, met local communities and attracted considerable public attention throughout their visit.
However, their reception reportedly did not go down well behind palace walls.
Quinn previously told The Mirror that Prince William was particularly unhappy with the situation, while King Charles was reportedly even angrier.
The royal author claimed that Charles and William had lengthy discussions about the possibility of stripping Harry and Meghan of their royal titles. However, they were reportedly concerned that taking such a drastic step could make the already difficult family situation even worse.
The possibility of removing their titles also raised another important question: would it actually change anything?
Even without their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles, Harry and Meghan would remain internationally recognised figures with considerable influence. Their charitable activities and public appearances could continue independently of the monarchy.
Meanwhile, the couple’s relationship with the royal family has remained a subject of public interest, particularly following their decision to step away from senior royal duties in 2020 and establish a new life in the United States.
Interestingly, Harry and Meghan returned to the UK in August 2026, prompting fresh speculation about whether their move could signal a new chapter in their relationship with the monarchy.
However, Buckingham Palace subsequently made its position clear.
In September, a formal letter issued on King Charles’s behalf reiterated that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain non-working royals. Their His and Her Royal Highness styles remain unused, and their charitable activities continue to be treated as private matters.
Despite the renewed attention surrounding their UK return, there has been no official announcement that King Charles intends to remove their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles.
Prince Harry has also expressed his desire to reconcile with his older brother, Prince William, suggesting that repairing their relationship remains important to him.
For now, the royal family’s complicated relationships continue to attract attention, with many observers wondering whether the Sussexes’ return to Britain could eventually open the door to a more peaceful relationship with the monarchy.
And while the reported discussions about their titles date back to the aftermath of their 2024 Nigeria visit, one question remains: could the royal family ever reach a point where those titles become a serious issue again?
