James Middleton’s baby son Inigo is inheriting a pint-sized royal wardrobe from his cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis!
Kate Middleton’s younger brother made the sweet revelation in his new memoir, Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life, out Sept. 24 — one of many anecdotes about how his “close-knit family” is there for one another. James, 37, and his wife Alizée Thevenet welcomed their first child in October 2023, and he reflected in his memoir about how his sisters Princess Kate and Pippa passed along clothes their children had previously worn when he introduced them to their new nephew.
“My sisters both have huge grins on their faces. It takes them back to the days when their firstborns were as tiny as their new nephew. ‘Welcome to parenthood,’ they say,” James wrote in Meet Ella, exclusively excerpted by PEOPLE.
We are an affectionate and close-knit family and there are lots of hugs and laughter. Catherine and Pippa bring two big suitcases of hand-me-down clothes, so Inigo’s cupboards are full of sweet little outfits his cousins — even the girls — have worn,” he wrote.
Princess Kate and Prince William are parents to George, 11, Charlotte, 9, and Louis, 6, while Pippa and her husband James Matthews share son Arthur, 5, and daughters Grace, 3, and Rose, 2.
James wrote that while the outfits seemed “enormous” for the baby, he didn’t realize that Inigo would quickly grow and “fit them in a blink.”
“We’re deluged with advice from my sisters, but we muddle through in our own way, sometimes getting things right, sometimes wrong,” he wrote in Meet Ella about how he and Alizée navigated the early days of new parenthood.
Speaking to Hello! for a cover story published on Sept. 23, the entrepreneur and mental health advocate said that the hand-me-downs for Inigo double as a touchstone for his sisters to remember when their children were younger.
“They are milestones, because [my sisters] remember when their child was wearing something, and how old they were — it takes them back,” James told the outlet. “It’s been a lovely thing for them.”
Practical parents Kate and William, both 42, have been known to dress their children in hand-me-downs from one another, which British childrenswear designer Rachel Riley previously told PEOPLE she appreciated.
“They love traditional clothes, and it’s lovely to see them wearing things again and again,” said Riley, whose designs have been worn by the Wales kids.
In Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life, James reflected on how his beloved dog Ella helped him survive his darkest moments of depression, and how the cocker spaniel was by his side during life’s pivotal events, from his sister’s royal wedding to Prince William and serendipitously introducing his family to Alizée.
Their son Inigo was born just months after Ella died in January 2023, and James told PEOPLE that reflecting for the memoir was an emotional process.
“It took me on a journey,” James said. “I hope that my son is able to learn about his own mental health way before I did so that he doesn’t have to go through some of the very painful moments that I went through.”
