CMT Shocks The Country Music World- Permanent Boycott of Taylor Swift with Bold Statement
A satirical article saying that the Academy of Country Music (ACM) has canceled U.S. singer Taylor Swift’s membership is being shared on social media as authentic news.
A Facebook post, opens new tab says, “The Academy of Country Music has canceled Taylor Swift’s membership, stating, ‘She hasn’t been country in years.’” A faint logo on the post includes text that reads, “satire.”
Some users appear to take the post seriously with comments including, “The young lady has a nice voice, but no, she is no longer country,” and “Well they are not wrong. When was last time she done some country music?”
The posts originated from an article by satire website Latherland, opens new tab, a subsidiary of America’s Last Line of Defense.
“Latherland.com is a subsidiary of the ‘America’s Last Line of Defense’ network of parody, satire, and tomfoolery, or as Snopes called it before they lost their war on satire: Junk News,” the “About Us, opens new tab” section of the website says.
“The story is definitely false and did indeed originate from a satire article,” Jesse Knutson, a representative for the ACM, said in an email. “Taylor Swift has earned a Lifetime Membership of the Academy of Country Music, and we have never discussed revoking that.
Swift has won and been nominated for many awards, opens new tab by the ACM, with her most recent win in 2014 and most recent nomination in 2021. She performed, opens new tab at the 55th Academy of Country Music Awards in 2020.
Representatives for Swift did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment.
